Our Committees
Communications Committee
Chair: Christel Ivanyshyn - e-mail Christel
Members:
Mandate: This committee is responsible for the maintenance of the web site, the publication of the newsletter, as well as any other initiatives geared to keeping our members informed on the activities of the association and pertinent information related to the field of emergency management in the province. People with writing skills are particularly in demand to work with this committee, however, all members can provide articles of interest to the committee chair for inclusion in the website.
Education and Awards Committee
Chair: Shawn Cowley - e-mail Shawn
Members:
The Education and Awards Committee has three major goals related to the enhancement of educational programs in emergency management for Ontarians:
- To establish ongoing relationships with educational institutions offering or interested in offering emergency management programs to Ontarians and ensure the presence of OAEM representatives on curriculum advisory committees of these institutions. This goal will help ensure consistency in curriculum and learning outcomes for students from one institution to the other. It will also help in ensuring that advances in the field are being introduced to the curriculum as the profession progresses.
- To provide tools and support to students enrolled in emergency management programs to help them succeed in their studies, find opportunities to gain experience, and find employment in the field upon graduation. By remaining connected with the students through the advisory committees of the various institutions, the OAEM will stay informed on the needs of the students.
- To work with educational institutions in encouraging students coming into or having an interest in the field of emergency management to join OAEM. This initiative aims at helping students establish network opportunities with practitioners and organizations likely to recruit them as emergency managers.
Membership Committee
Chair: Denise Stone - e-mail Denise
Members:
Mandate: Responsible for the recruitment, registration, renewal, and maintenance of new memberships for the Association. It requires a bit of marketing ability, occasional presence at special events where the Association can be promoted such as the World Conference on Disaster Management, and a bit of administration for the handling of registrations and renewals. This is a small committee that requires three or four people to coordinate, however, every member should participate in promoting the association.
Partnership Committee
Chair: Dan Metcalfe - e-mail Dan
Members:
Mandate: Responsible to ensure the presence of OAEM members on various external committees to represent the association and speak on its behalf. Presently a number of our members sit on committees at EMO, the CSA, IAEM and a few others. As we grow this role will become more and more important as our professional opinion will be requested on many fronts. In order for us not to burden one or two people to attend all of these committees, we require many members so that each is responsible to sit on one committee, report to the OAEM Governmental Affairs Committee and obtain direction from the board through the chair of the committee. We probably could use about a dozen people on this committee.
Professional Development and Training Committee
Chair: Rob McDonald - e-mail Rob and Kevin Spencer - e-mail Kevin
Members:
Mandate: The main focus of the Professional Development Committee is to ensure all members have the opportunity to expand their networks and knowledge through Professional Development Sessions.
The Sessions will be developed with an inclusive focus ensuring all participants benefit from every session. Each session will strive to have an educational component for both Private and Municipal Emergency Managers.
The location of each Session will depend on the subject matter while offering a variety of locations to ensure members have equal opportunities to travel and showcase their communities.
The subject matter of the sessions is decided through the interests and requests of the membership. By providing feedback to the Professional Development Chair, ideas for each Professional Development Session will be customized to the interests of the membership.
The ultimate goal is to use the Professional Development Sessions to evolve this Association as a true Ontario-wide organization for all private and municipal emergency managers.
Sponsorship Committee
