OAEM operates a number of active committees to address projects and issues as part of the organization's strategic plan. We are always looking for volunteers to get involved and participate.
Communications:
Members: |
This committee is responsible for the maintenance of the web site, the publication of the newsletter, as well as any other initiatives geared to keeping our members informed on the activities of the association and pertinent information related to the field of emergency management in the province. People with writing skills are particularly in demand to work with this committee, however, all members can provide articles of interest to the committee chair for inclusion in the regular newsletters. |
Certification:Members:
|
This committee is working towards developing a certification program for our members. The committee has long-term goals of providing recognition of our members as professionals in the field of emergency management. The committee works closely with the International Association of Emergency Managers towards developing criteria for certification, and testing mechanisms. We hope to see some day in the future when the Association can provide a professional certification to members who have fulfilled all criteria. We also look forward to the day when employers will require certification when hiring emergency managers. People who already have a professional designation would be an asset to this committee but anyone with an interest in seeing the professionalization of our association is encouraged to participate. |
Membership: |
This committee looks after the recruitment, registration, renewal, and maintenance of new memberships for the Association. It requires a bit of marketing ability, occasional presence at special events where the Association can be promoted such as the World Conference on Disaster Management, and a bit of administration for the handling of registrations and renewals. This is a small committee that requires three or four people to coordinate, however, every member should participate in promoting the association. |
Professional Development and Training: |
This committee plans and organises the OAEM professional development workshops. These workshops are planned for three times a year. In the future, this committee will also be looking at other avenues whereby we can provide access to professional development of our memebers particularly when they are located in some of our remote areas of the province. This committee requires commitment from about half a dozen members presently, but could see growth with new initiatives. We need people who are good at organising events including room reservations, catering, audio-visual requirements, as well as contacting and confirming guest speakers. |
Partnerships: |
This committee ensures the presence of OAEM members on various external committees to represent the association and speak on its behalf. Presently a number of our members sit on committees at EMO, the CSA, IAEM and a few others. As we grow this role will become more and more important as our professional opinion will be requested on many fronts. In order for us not to burden one or two people to attend all of these committees, we require many members so that each is responsible to sit on one committee, report to the OAEM Governmental Affairs Committee and obtain direction from the board through the chair of the committee. We probably could use about a dozen people on this committee. |
Sponsorship: |
This committee looks into obtaining sponsors for our professional developments events and our social activities. Anyone interested in sponsoring the association should contact the chair to find out more on our fees and our benefits. |
Education Programs: |
This committee is responsible for the liaison with existing and new emergency management education programs through colleges and universities in Ontario as well as providing the support to the students and alumni from such programs. The committee assigns members to sit on the educational institution's advisory committees to ensure content of programs fit with generally accepted principles of emergency management. The committee also review applications from educational institutions to be recognized by OAEM. The committee also manages the OAEM student awards program which offers awards on an annual basis to students demonstrating the most promise in the field. |
Awards and Recognition: |
This committee aims to provide recognition of members that have contributed significantly to the advancement of the goals of the association. At this time the committee is working towards creating such a program for practitioners. The committee will eventually ensure a review of candidates proposed for award and recognition by members, investigate the validity of the candidature and organise the delivery of the award to the person being recognised. |
